Mtd Self Propelled Platinum Series Mower (12AI832Q724) Review

Mtd Self Propelled Platinum Series MowerI replaced my old mower with this model of Honda-engined mower. It was completely assembled in the box and came with everything needed to mow--except the gasoline.Adding the first oil was easy and intuitive, and adjusting the handle height was simple. From the time I opened the box to the time I was mowing the lawn was a whopping ten minutes.

The pull start is easy to operate and the choke system makes starting a one or two pull event.Plus, the choke returns to running position on its own so once the engine kicks over, you're good to go.The unit functioned flawlessly, chewing through fairly high and semi-damp grass with ease.I mulched on my first round and the clippings were finely chopped and fairly well distributed.

The controls are well-placed and intuitive. The safety disconnect is easy to hold down. The self-drive lever is stiff, however, and the fine adjustment doesn't change the stiffness. After my 1/3 acre lot, my right hand was fairly cramped. The lever is situated such that using the left hand or both hands is not easily possible. This is my primary complaint about the unit. The self-drive unit works well, though the continuous velocity adjustment isn't quite as useful as you would think; it is sort of handy when cornering, but that's about it.

My other minor complaint is about the gas tank size. It's pretty small.Granted, this is a minor thing--the mower holds enough gas to run through my 1/3 acre lot without a refill.I'm just used to larger tanks and when I fill the unit I usually overfill.Spilled gas is captured in the curvature of the steel deck.

In summary--the mower is what you would expect.Well-designed, well-built, efficient, and simple to use.I'm glad I bought it and plan on using it for many years.

Poulan Pro PR173T22RP 21-Inch 173cc Kohler Gas Powered Side Discharge/Mulch/Bag FWD Self Propelled Lawn Mower Review

Poulan Pro PR173T22RP 21 inch 173cc Kohler Gas Powered Side Discharge/Mulch/Bag FWD Self Propelled Lawn MowerI too purchase this mower on sale at Menards to replace a Snapper with a Briggs engine which had starting/run issues starting after 3 years. I did not do much research on this mower, but remembered good comments on Kohler years back when looking for a mower. Appearently, Kohler uses heavy duty components even in their smaller engines. The price was competitive on this unit, but for $50 more I could have got a name brand mower with a Honda engine with variable speed at Lowes. I believe Lowes would replace the unit if I did not like it.

Performance wise, this mower is bagging grass fine. I thought maybe the bag would not hold much,as compared with my prior mower, but holds about 3/4 of a garbage can and does not clog up like my former mower. Cutting thick long grass did not slow mowing performance. Engine has nice, not too loud hum to it when running. I takes one to two pulls to start when changing bags on a hot engine. The engine needs no priming and this may cause an additional pull on a hot engine. Cold engine started with one pull. I looked on Sears web site to check reviews on what others thought of this engine and nearly all were favorable.

This mower has front wheel drive and has OK traction. My Snapper had rear wheel traction and that was better, but inclines are the only area of concern. I just lift the handle up a bit and that forces more pressure to the front tires and all is fine.

I think this should be a good mower, but time will tell.

Lawn Boy 10642 20-Inch 6.75-Gross-Torque Gas-Powered Lawn Mower Review

Lawn Boy 10642 20 inch 6.75-Gross-Torque Gas-Powered Lawn MowerI bought this mower when it was at the presale price. Well, I got it sent to my home(Free Shipping was awesome!) and finally got the mower out to use over the weekend! Well, I could not be more pleased! At first turn of the key it started and I was off! It ran smooth and pretty quiet!
I did not use the bag and it mulched the leaves into little pieces! It works really well! I am very happy!Update...Here it is April 2010 and I uncovered the mower, put some fresh gasoline in it and turned the key......It cranked right away! I thought that I might have to baby it since it had not been used in several months!! No such thing!! I am so glad that I bought this and you will be also!
