Neuton Battery Electric Lawn Mower Review

Neuton Battery Electric Lawn MowerI was committed to purchasing an electric lawnmower.Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of options and even fewer reviews so was hard to decide!Ultimately went with the neuton and have been very happy. It is extremely light and easy to maneuver and turn which is great b/c we have a couple of hills and narrow spaces on our lawn.I was worried b/c it is more narrow than some mowers (maybe 14"?) but that hasn't been a problem at all; in fact, it makes many parts of the yard easier to mow.Charges quickly and we haven't had any battery problems.Never ran out of charge on our small lawn (takes about 45").It is quiet (not noiseless, but I can cut early in the morning without waking the neighbors) and cuts well.I'm thrilled not to have a cord, and it is easy to start and stop.Haven't used the mulcher or any other fancy accessories (the local sales guy said not to bother with buying those).

I would buy this again without hesitation and would recommend to others.I didn't give it 5 stars only b/c there are so few cordless electric mowers to choose from in 2005 that I can't imagine this is yet the model of perfection, but for the average small lawn owner (like me), it's a great machine.

Addendum 7/2006: now in our second season and no complaints. We love this machine; it was a great purchase for us.
Addendum 9/2007: third season, great machine. Now that I've seen its durability, I would give this product 5 starts (Amazon won't let me change my original rating).
Addendum 6/2009: fifth season, still totally satisfied with this machine.Blade became "unbalanced" and needed repair in year 4.Battery still going strong (we keep it plugged in all year).

At 35 lbs., the lightweight NEUTON Cordless Electric Trimmer is remarkably easy to maneuver, gliding up hills and over bumpy terrain to trim precisely around trees, shrubs, lamp posts, and all the hard-to-reach spots in your yard. It's an edger, too! With a simple twist, the NEUTON's trimmer head pivots to a 45 or 90 degree angle, so the nylon cords cut vertically, for edging right down to ground level. Neuton 81214A00006-1301 Trimmer/Edger Attachment For CE 5 Lawn Mowers Review

Neuton 81214A00006-1301 Trimmer/Edger Attachment For CE 5 Lawn MowersWe have had a Neuton 5.1 mower for some time. We love it. Once you go electric you can never go back. No gas, no fumes, no yanking, no tune-ups, no oil, mowing heaven. I personally think you'd have to be nuts to even consider going gas if you needed a new mower. I haven't even mentioned that gas mowers are INCREDIBLE polluters. Taking into account the pollution used to create the electricty for Neutons, Neutons still pollute a small fraction of what gas mowers do. Anyhow if you are here you probably have a Neuton but in case you were considering one, I say great move to get a Neuton or at least an electric mower.

But one of the nicest things about the Neuton is this attachment. I have always had problems with hand held edgers and trimmers to get the things to work and to advance cord, even with auto advance. The Neuton attachment advances the cord automatically and flawlessly. The replacement cartridges are easy to install and last a long time. It is super easy to use. Just stick in front and flip the power switch to aux and away you go.

It is very powerful as an edger and does a great, clean job. It also is very powerful as a trimmer. The only thing to keep in mind is that it does have limitations as a trimmer. It will go up and down when you raise and lower the Neuton but obviously does not have the range of heights a handheld trimmer would. So for trimming high hedges this will not work. But for trimming around trees, and flower beds, and our herb and vegetable gardens this works great.

Highly recommended as is the Neuton. And, again, if you take care of your own lawn, sell on Ebay or give away your gas mower now and get an electric. I would highly recommend cordless. Almost anyone who I have ever talked to that had one bad thing to say about an electric mower was because it was corded and a hassle. Electric mowers are the best thing to happen to lawn care since...well since people started having lawns.

Neuton Trimmer/Edger Attachment For CE 6 Lawn Mowers Review

Neuton Trimmer/Edger Attachment For CE 6 Lawn MowersBummer that the previous reviewer had reliability issues with his Trimmer/Edger attachment. I bought mine with my Neuton 6.0 and it's worked fine, so seeing the other review, I felt I should mention how well it actually works.

And the answer is, very well. It's a powerful little trimmer, and the convenience of being able to just throw the switch on the handle of the mower to swap between mowing and trimming can't be beat. I use this to edge, and to hit tall grass/weeds near the dropoffs or fences where the mower "can't cut it."

The only downside is that it's not as easily maneuverable as a hand-held trimmer. Because it's mounted on one side of the mower, you may have to swing the mower around and reverse directions to be able to put the trimmer into the right spot. Not a big deal.

I have a nice gas trimmer as well, but it never gets used as this is so much more convenient, and no messing with gas/oil.

Neuton CE 5.2 14-Inch 24-Volt Cordless Electric Discharge/Mulching/Bagging Lawn Mower With Removable Battery Review

Neuton CE 5.2 14 inch 24-Volt Cordless Electric Discharge/Mulching/Bagging Lawn Mower With Removable BatteryI have owned this mower for over a year now. I have two large lawns including an area for my dog run which gets high sometimes because I don't mow every week. The major reason I considered buying an electric mower was that the gas rotary mowers I have owned always were hard to start after the Winter season. I saw an ad for the Neuton and a cordless electric seemed attractive. No cord to run over or move around.

RATING DETAILS
Here is where the Neuton earned points:

1) Its starts every time.
2) Its environmentally friendly. No exhaust and no noise.
3) Its lighter than my old steel gas mower (slightly).
4) No leaking fluids when you want to turn it over to clean or maintain the blade.
5) Not that I don't own and like many foreign produced items, but this is made in America (Vermont). It feels good to me to support our domestic market!

Here is where the Neuton lost a few points:

1) After the first year the battery seems to be losing some of its charging capacity. Where I used to get an hour and a half's life on a full charge, now I get maybe an hour. Note this is a lead/acid battery and not a more high tech variety.
2) The trimmer attachment works, but its not really that maneuverable. Keep your corded electric string trimmer and pass on the too expensive trimmer attachment.
3) It takes me two days to mow all my grass. Seriously consider buying the extra battery if you have a lot of lawn to cut.
4) If you expect this mower to be as robust as your gas rotary model, you will probably be disappointed. But since the gas mowers where I live no longer come with a variable throttle, you don't really lose that much power. I see Neuton has a newer, more powerful version now. I would probably have purchased that one if it were available at the time.

Over-all I am happy with the purchase.

The Neuton CE 5.2 Battery-Powered Mower is a welcome relief from the arm-yanking pull-starts, noxious fumes, startling noises, and uncomfortable vibrations of a gas lawn mower. It starts every time with a simple push of a button and mows for up to an hour on a single charge--ample time for most small- to medium-sized lawns. Need more time? Unlike other battery mowers with built-in batteries that require you to stop mowing to recharge, the CE 5.2 lets you drop in an optional spare battery and keep on mowing. For added convenience, you can also use the CE 5.2 as a trim mower for larger lawns.
Environmentally Friendly Gas- and Oil-Free Operation
The key benefits of the CE 5.2 are that it works well without compromising the environment, and that it doesn't demand continual maintenance. Because this mower never requires gas or oil, it won't need a tune-up. Plus, it runs clean, meaning it won't release harmful pollutants or carbon emissions into the air. Additionally, no gas or oil means easy cleaning and safe storage without spills or fumes.
Magnet Battery and 3-in-1 Cutting Options for Power and Versatility
This efficient mower owes its robust performance to a 32-amp, 240-watt-hour, 24-volt permanent magnet battery that's both removable and sealed. The battery provides an impressive 45-60-minute run time per charge, depending on grass conditions. The CE 5.2 also offers versatile three-in-one cutting options and includes a rear grass bag (which holds one full bushel of clippings), a side discharge chute, and a mulching plug.
Lightweight for Easy Pushing, Adjustable Height for Greater Flexibility
Easy to operate, the CE 5.2 weighs just 48 pounds, so you won't struggle to push it across your lawn. Additionally, a single-touch height-adjustment lever raises and lowers the cutting blade from 1.2 inches to 3.0 inches, giving you great flexibility.
14-Inch Cutting Width for Better Control and Great Results
Equipped with seven-inch front wheels and eight-inch rear wheels, the CE 5.2 is stable and sturdy, even when mowing around trees or shrubs or on rugged terrain. Its 14-inch cutting width lets you power through your lawn, leaving only manicured grass behind.
Truly Quiet Operation for More Enjoyable Yard Work
Because it runs on a battery, the CE 5.2 boasts a quiet running noise of less than 80 DbA. The low noise level makes operation more pleasant for both you and your neighbors. You might even be able to ditch those ear plugs for good!
Cost-Effective Design Saves You Money
The CE 5.2 saves you money year after year thanks to its low operating costs. The estimated cost to operate a gas mower (including gasoline, oil, spark plugs, filters, and tune-ups) for four years is as much as $260.00. The costs of recharging the battery over four years of mowing 28 times per year with a Neuton Mower is approximately $11.20. That's a huge savings!
Ready to Go Right Out of the Box
With the CE 5.2, you don't have to wait to mow. It arrives with everything you need to get started right away, including the battery, battery charger, and rear grass-collection bag.
Optional Accessories for All-in-One Yard Maintenance
Neuton Mowers have attachments and accessories that give you options other mowers simply can't. For instance, the optional Trimmer/Edger Attachment eliminates the need for a second piece of equipment and gives your yard and walkways a beautiful, clean finish. And for longer running time, you can also purchase an optional Spare Battery (model 178781).
The CE 5.2 measures 18 x 30 x 37 inches (WxHxD), weighs 48 pounds, and comes with a two-year limited warranty.

Neuton CE 6.4 19-Inch 36-Volt Cordless Electric Mulching/Bagging Lawn Mower with Removable Battery Review

Neuton CE 6.4 19 inch 36-Volt Cordless Electric Mulching/Bagging Lawn Mower with Removable BatteryUPDATE: I have now used the mower over 5 times, and I can say that it keeps getting better, I think it's due to the fact that battery powered tools take a few charge-recharge cycles to get to their full power potential. I now have no problem cutting my entire yard, and have not had it struggle or leave many clippings on the yard.

I bought this mower as it is one of the Best Cordless, battery-powered electrics. It is rated at 36-volts and is 19-inches. This seems to compare pretty good to a gas model in terms of cutting time and speed.
I ordered the CE 6.4 model with the Duracell brand battery.

PROS:
1. Removable Battery life is good (after first charge)
2. EASY adjust height of all 4 wheels with ONE lever.
3. Large diameter wheels, Clean sturdy Design. Quiet too.
4. Easy Start, hold-down power button, and squeeze levers.
5. NO GASOLINE, no more trips to gas station.
6. This is a push-mower, but it is pretty Light-weight and easy to push.

CONS:
1. Don't let your grass get too big or overgrown.. it can struggle.
2. Similar to #1 above, the Bag is average for capacity of clippings.
3. Clippings are not always collected in the bag, even if bag is empty.

I unpacked (it comes mostly in modular assembly already) and assembled the entire mower in about 15 minutes, it is very easy and basically requires no tools, just use the parts supplied and assemble. Instructions could be improved. One of the things I didn't like was the Power cable that comes up from the unit to the handle bar is a little too long so it kinda hangs too much, even after you use the supplied tie downs, this can be fixed by adding your own zip-ties if you want, but not a major problem.
After the first charge, I mowed my yard, front and back, for about 45 minutes, at level 3 height, the grass had not been cut in a few weeks and the battery was dying towards the end, struggling to cut. The next time I went out to mow, grass only about 1.5 weeks had gone by and I cut the grass with not problems, mower seemed stronger and the Battery meter never went into the Yellow.
Overall this is a good mower IF: You mow regularly DON'T let it get too big and have a reasonably sized lawn. The mower will struggle if grass is wet or you are cutting too much length. My front and back yard are not small but I would say average size about 800-1000 sq. ft. total. If you have a large yard or multiple yards you can purchase an extra/spare battery for reserve. I do not think I will need that.
The only thing keeping me from 5 stars is that the bag doesn't always collect all the clippings and sometimes I have to go back over it with the mower to collect the remaining strips of clippings that were left on the grass... maybe loses 10% of clippings I would guess.

Also it comes with the mulching plug, but I have not tried that or any other accessories. I know Neuton offers a trimmer/edger attachment, but have heard its not very good. In the future I might get the Striping attachment which makes your lawn look patterned.

Neuton CE 5.4 14-Inch 24-Volt Cordless Electric Mulching/Bagging Lawn Mower with Removable Battery Review

Neuton CE 5.4 14 inch 24-Volt Cordless Electric Mulching/Bagging Lawn Mower with Removable BatterySummary: If you have a very small yard (Perhaps 1000-1500 square feet of lawn) this could be a decent compromise for you, otherwise I don't think the 14" path and limited battery capacity will "cut it"

My neighbor has this one from a couple of years ago and I tried it out. It's smaller, lighter and quieter than the two cordless mowers we've used but that 14" path would probably be a dealbreaker for most people. When you consider that you will overlap each pass by at least 2-3 inches, you're really only cutting 10-11 inches on each pass.
+ Easy to maneuver
+ Quiet
+ Small
+ Super light compared to our B&D CM1100 or Toro, both of which weigh about twice as much

- 14" path!?!?!
- Pricey for what you get
- Hard to cut near obstacles

>>Why SHOULD I get a cordless electric mower? They are super quiet, clean, and convenient. No fumes or exhaust- because gas mowers don't have catalytic converters, they can pollute as much in a year as 43 cars!!!!.They aren't necessarily cheaper than a gas mower since they cost more up front but there is basically NO maintenance. (We spent $80 over 10 years for a set of replacement batteries.) Corded electric mowers are a cheaper but having a cord is a pain.

>>Why SHOULDN'T I get a cordless mower? They weigh a LOT more than gas mowers so if you have a hilly lot or have difficulty with physical exertion, forget it. They don't have as much power as gas and re-fueling means charging for a few hours so if your lot is over ½ acre you may want to reconsider.

>>Why do they all come with mulching PLUS bagging? Electric powered mowers have come a long ways but mulching still takes a LOT more power than discharging, so bagging is pretty much a standard feature.

>>What is a watt-hour? It's basically how big your gas tank is - the more watt-hours, the longer you can mow before you have to recharge.

>>Is the cutting path a big deal? Yes - for two reasons. 1) The first thing manufacturers do when power is marginal is reduce the blade size, so I tend to see the smaller mowers as more likely to be underpowered. Second, when you consider that you have to overlap each pass by ~3", a 20" blade now effectively cuts 13% more on each pass. If you have a larger yard, you definitely do NOT want anything under 18"Also, my measurements show most mowers overstate their blade size by 1/2" (Our 20" measures 19-5/8, our 19 measures 18-1/2)

>>Why might I want a removable battery? If you have a large yard, this means you can have a second battery charging while you are using the first. A second battery typically costs $100-$150 but it can make the difference between going electric or not. Finally, if you keep the mower in a shed that doesn't have power, a removable battery will let you bring it in for charging.

>>How long will my batteries last? That depends on your climate and usage. We had a small lot for many years and were religious about recharging right after use. We also live in a cooler climate (Michigan) so it's cooler and the mowing season is shorter. Our batteries lasted ~7 years. Most people should get 3-4 years easily but if you're careless and live in Arizona, you might be able to kill the batteries in a year or two.

>>Why should I care about higher voltage? Higher voltage = more power, PLUS you can recharge the mower faster. With the same chemistry and current, a 36V mower will charge 50% faster than a 24V mower.

>>Metal deck or plastic? Metal rusts but with minimal care it's not an issue. Plastic ends up giving you a more stuff to trim since you can't cut as close to fences, etc.
